Can you think of any strange pets?

I am thinking of getting a pet that is kind of strange. This may sound weird, but I love tarantulas and pets of that sort. But I have to find one that doesn't live very long because my mom wouldnt want to take care of it when i go to college. I good age would be from 2-5 years? And i really want a tarantula. so if anyone has any information about buying or the temperment of male tarantulas that would be helpful. I heard they live for a shorter time.
