Electric Guitar Help Please?

Merry Christmas ;). I just got a First Act 222 electric guitar, the Adam Levine one. I love it, and I want to play it, but it sounds HORRIBLE. I can play the smoke on the water riff (because, I think, they're just notes) but when I try to play a chord, like g, it sounds BAD. Discordant and nothing like the note. I adjusted the action and everything but it still sounds terrible.
